Why this new website?
The LIWMD is a dependent special district within the City of Fort Lauderdale established to protect the water quality of the 10 canals and New River within Lauderdale Isles. The traditional role of the LIWMD since its creation in 1970 has been aquatic weed control in the Lauderdale Isles canals. There have been numerous incidents of aquatic weed blooms over the years and LIWMD arranged for spraying to keep these weeds under control. Additionally, LIWMD partnered with Broward County in 2002 to perform a major canal cleaning/dredging project prior to the annexation of our neighborhood into Fort Lauderdale that year. More recently, LIWMD installed the new signs at the entrances to all our canals in 2011.
At our meetings this year, the board has decided to expand our role to address many more issues relating to the waterways of Lauderdale Isles. All of these issues are ultimately related to water quality.
One of our first projects is the development of a new LIWMD website. This site is being created to be both educational and as one-stop resource for any and all information regarding our waterways. When completed, you will be able to go to our website and find the answer to any water-related question.
Some of the topics we intend to include:
- The increase of alligators in our canals in the past six months
- Are the blue crabs and fish in our waterways safe for consumption
- Monitoring of water quality parameters in the New River by Broward County Environmental Services
- Derelict Boats and the Florida’s Derelict Vessel Program
- Canal debris, especially lawn service workers dumping debris in our canals
- The city's canal dredging program
- Canal depths and obstructions
- Docks: construction, permits and dilapidated docks
- Additional waterway cleanup events
- Coordination with city agencies that have waterway responsibilities
- Oil slicks & pollution
- Safe navigation
Although the site is new and still under construction, we welcome comments and suggestions.
